The Maritime and History Museum of the Croatian Littoral Rijeka came after two museums: Museo Civico, established in 1893 and City Museum Sušak, established in 1934.
Institution history
The Museum is placed in one of the most beautiful architectonic achievements in Rijeka from the end of the 19th century, the work of the Hungarian architect Alajosz Hauszman, built for the needs of the residence of the royal governor.
The Palace was built as a residence in a park, in the neo-Renaissance style, with a partly ambient preserved interior which numerous entrepreneurs, painters and sculptors from Rijeka, Budapest and Trieste participated in during its creation.
Today this building is the museum palace where are collected, preserved, studied and presented items related to the history and culture of the Primorsko-Goranska County and City of Rijeka as its centre, from prehistory to the present day are collected
Activity:
The Maritime and History Museum of Croatian Coastland Rijeka elaborates, systemizes and presents the role in the development of general social being in the Primorsko-Goranska County, Croatian Coastland and City of Rijeka through the research of complex sources (archaeological, ethnographical, artistic, cultural-historical and maritime-historical characteristics) from prehistory to the new age, using expertise and scientific methods. Through this the Museum indicates specific characteristics and interactive relationships of this area with other European areas during thousand of years and it intends to be a dynamic, open and educative institution.
Archive:
The Archaeological Department represents one rich part of the museum’s collection with prehistoric, antiquity, medieval and numismatic collections. The Department of Maritime History contains a collection of the historical reconstruction of ships, ship equipment, nautical instruments and maps, pictures and graphics. There are also the Ethnographical and Cultural-historical Departments.
Services:
The headquarters of the museum is in the former Governor's Palace, which is a protected cultural monument and at the same time the exhibit no.1 of the Museum. The Museum offers an interdisciplinary approach – identification, introduction and understanding of characters and people, memories and myths, revealing identities and in this way represents an unbreakable connection between the past and present.
