Institution history

The library holdings of the University Library Rijeka are based upon the books of the Jesuit College that was founded in Rijeka in 1627. Today’s University Library in Rijeka started working in 1949 as the Scientific Library of Rijeka. Since its foundation, the Library has been providing services primarily for researchers and students from the region. In 1979 the Library became a member of the University of Rijeka.

Activity:

The University Library participates in a series of projects, of which the following are most important:

• The digital collection of dissertations defended at the University of Rijeka;

• Ensuring access to library resources for e-learning at the University of Rijeka;

• Preserving the European library heritage in the University Library Rijeka by creating a Historical Collection;

• Digitization of historical research sources from the library holdings: 1843-1918 (old Rijeka newspapers and rare materials);

• Preservation and restoration of old newspapers in the University Library Rijeka holdings;

• Modernization and popularization of the permanent Glagolitic Alphabet Exhibition.

Services:

• Enables access to its own library holdings and other information sources in Croatia and abroad.

• Enables usage of library materials on the Library premises, loans materials for use outside of the Library and conducts interlibrary loaning of materials from the library holdings, both from Croatian and foreign libraries.

• Offers information, enabling access to databases and other information sources.

• Instructs users on using information sources (electronic library catalogues and databases).

• Providing reprographic and digitalization services.

• Enables usage of the space for work within the Library premises (Reading room and Science-research reading room). The users have at their disposal computer equipment and internet access, with an option of borrowing laptops linked into library wireless network, for the purpose of writing.

• Enables using Library services through the web-pages.

• Provides publishers with services of classifying publications with the UDK system and formulation of CIP data.

• Loans materials for exhibitions.

• Organizes exhibitions and university events on the Library premises.
